Governments in the Asia and Pacific region need up-to-date national policies, plans and laws on ageing in order to address the needs of older people and be prepared for the effects of demographic change on their societies and economies. Several countries in Asia are currently drafting or revision ageing policy documents. Among them, Myanmar passed a law for older people in 2016 and is currently preparing a 20-year National Policy on Ageing and an accompanying five-year National Action Plan on Ageing.

This two-day regional event in Nay Pyi Taw co-hosted by HelpAge International, UNFPA and Myanmar’s Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement is an opportunity to share experience and best practice related to policies on ageing. The event will be a combination of expert presentations and open discussion. The experts will be from national government departments including from Myanmar, HelpAge International, UN agencies and external experts on ageing.

The event will discuss the topic through two main sub-themes: Nature and scope of policies and Implementation of policies.
