“Active ageing is the process of optimizing opportunities for health, participation and security in order to enhance quality of life as people age.” This document was prepared by WHO to inform the discussion at the 2002 2nd UN World Assembly on Ageing in Madrid, from which the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing was produced.  It gives understanding to the rationale and evidence to support active ageing, the challenges of ageing populations and policy response recommendations.
