UNFPA Asia Pacific Regional Office published a dispatch from the first day of the Conference (1 September 2014), entitled “Ageing population doesn’t have to be a ‘time bomb’, Asia conference hears”.

The predicted catastrophe resulting from the rapid ageing of Asian populations is not inevitable, and by changing economic and health policies as well as mindsets, countries can head off disaster by minimizing the burden and maximizing the contribution of older persons.

Lubna Baqi, UNFPA Deputy Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, noted in her speech at the Conference that ageing-related issues need more attention in the global framework being developed to follow the Millennium Development Goals.
